Judiciary must be faster in dealing with terrorism: Kalam

BANGALORE: Expressing concern over increasing incidents of terrorism in the country, former President A P J Abdul Kalam felt the judiciary should work faster in such cases.
He was speaking at the silver jubilee function of St Anne's PU College here on Sunday. "The country needs an integrated intelligence bureau to counter terrorism. Even people need to participate in the movement to fight the menace," he said.

Iterating that India could become a developed nation by 2020, Kalam said it should maintain 10% GDP growth for the next 10 years. On the demand for separate statehoods in various regions, he said in a democracy, the nation has to pay heed to people's needs. "Whatever changes we make, it shouldn't damage popular aspirations," he said.

Urging students to join politics and change it into a field of `integrity and purpose', Kalam felt there's nothing wrong in making it a career choice. "To learn is your job now. Apart from this, you can plant more trees, teach the illiterate, visit hospitals and old-age homes in your free time. All this, without affecting your education," he said.

What's a good college
On what should be a good college, Kalam said: "Students of this college should walk with teachers. Teachers should be there to assist students in the learning process. He should be a role model himself. A good library, internet facility and creative labs are required. Creativity shouldn't be restricted to a particular stream of students. Neither should there be any distinction among them. The college should be able to produce students who have the confidence to say `I can do it'. And finally, they should take pride in being an alumni of that college."
